Tommaso Moramarco is a Research Director at the Italian National Research Council (CNR). He previously served as Director of the Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) and as President of the Turin Research Area. He was also President of the Italian Hydrological Society from 2017 to 2022 and holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in Hydraulics and Hydrology.

He earned his degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Hydraulics and Soil Conservation, from the University of Bari. Since the late 1980s, his research has focused on hydrological processes and natural hazard management. His work encompasses hydrometeorological monitoring using both ground-based and satellite observations, flood forecasting, and the development of landslide early warning systems. His research interests also include hydrogeological risk mitigation, the application of entropy theory to natural river systems, and the impacts of climate change on drought, the water cycle, and dam safety.

Throughout his career, he has established a strong international profile, serving as a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1997 and at Louisiana State University in November 2004. He has also represented Italy as a delegate to the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and served on the Technical Committee of the Tiber River Basin Authority under the Italian Ministry of Agricultural Policies.

He has received several national and international awards, including the Norman Medal, presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2010. His scientific output comprises more than 350 publications, including over 180 articles in leading international journals in the fields of hydrology and hydraulics.

Mauro Fiorentino (Naples, 15 June 1955) graduated in Hydraulic Civil Engineering in 1979. Since 1987 he has been at the University of Basilicata, where he has been a Full Professor of Hydraulic Structures and Hydrology since 1994. In 1981 he was a researcher at ENEL-CRIS. From 1983 to 1987 he was a researcher at the University of Calabria. In 1984 he was a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Hydrology in Wallingford (UK), and from July 1985 he spent one year as a Research Associate at Louisiana State University (USA). He was awarded the IAHR Lecturer Award.

He carries out extensive research activity in various fields of Hydrology, with particular reference to natural and environmental complex systems. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications and editor of several books.

From 1998 to 2002 he was Director of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Physics (DIFA) at the University of Basilicata. From 2002 to 2009 he was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the same university. From 2000 to 2002 he was Deputy Director of the Interuniversity Center for Environmental Monitoring (CIMA). From 2005 to 2009 he was a member of the board of the Interuniversity Consortium for Access to Engineering Schools (CISIA). From 2006 to 2009 he was Secretary of the board of the Conference of Deans of Italian Engineering Faculties (CoPI). From 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the organizing committee of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Basilicata and a member of the board of the interuniversity consortium for advanced training E-Form.

He was the founder of the Interuniversity Consortium for Hydrology (CINID), which he chaired from 2009 to 2014 and from 2019 to 2024. From 16 September 2009 to 30 September 2014 he served as Rector of the University of Basilicata. From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Francesco Saverio Nitti Foundation. Since 2013 he has been President of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Girolamo Orlando Foundation. From 10 July 2013 to 8 September 2019 he was President of the State Conservatory of Music “Gesualdo da Venosa” in Potenza.

In 2014 he founded the UniversaMusica Association, of which he served as President. From July 2014 to April 2016 he was appointed by the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI) as a member of the Board of Directors of the Consortium GARR. He represented the University of Basilicata on the Board of Directors of the committee promoting Matera’s candidacy as European Capital of Culture for 2019. From 2015 to 2022 he was coordinator of the PhD program in Cities and Landscapes at the University of Basilicata.

Since November 2016 he has been a member of the Evaluation Unit of the University of Naples Federico II. Since 11 October 2017 he has been a member of the Italian National Committee of the International Hydrological Program (IHP) of UNESCO. Since 19 July 2021 he has been President of the Giustino Fortunato Foundation. Since June 2021 he has also been President of the Italian Group of Hydraulics (the scientific society of the disciplinary group “hydraulics, hydrology, hydraulic and maritime structures”).
